Functional data analysis (FDA) is a relatively new branch of statistics, going back to the early 1990s, but its mathematical foundations are rooted in much earlier developments in the theory of operators in a Hilbert space and the functional analysis. Collaborative work performed by the Remote Data Analysis and Visualization Center (RDAV) and University of Tennessee (UT), Knoxville, artist Evan Meaney that examines the interplay of data, information, and knowledge has won the jury prize for the Distributed Microtopias exhibition at the 15th Annual Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival (FLEFF). Matlab is a business application developed by MathWorks, Inc. Techniques for sparse data are implemented in the Matlab package PACE developed at the University of California at Davis, available at http://anson.ucdavis.edu/~mueller/data/software.html, at the time of writing. Programming applications include display and assessment of possible casual relationships between variables.
